assume that early propaganda and use of the media by those in power was alive and well during the Civil War era. The works of Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner
stand testament to the awesome task that these men set for themselves, and in so doing preserved a small snapshot of an awesome and awful time in Americas history. When
one looks at American history, there can be few other such instances where the views and philosophies of one nations people can be so divergent as to begin a war
within its own borders. Such is the case of the American Civil War. As states began interacting with one another and exchanging goods and services, it became evident that the
new nation was indeed a collection of two very diverging points of view on several major issues. Those issues mainly boiled down to the ability of each individual state to
regulate itself, versus the collective power of a centralized government for all. Photograph taking during this time was quite primitive to say the least. Generally, two photographers worked together because
one would have to mix the chemicals and take charge of developing the photographs on the spot. The focusing and positioning of the camera would be another all encompassing task.
