Dostoyevsky. The nature of the ending serves a dramatic purpose in both authors works and contributes better to the overall theme of the work than the expected ending. George Sands work, The Country Waif, tells the tale of a young child exploited by nearly everyone around him. In the end it chronicles the rags to riches rise of a poor child to the Opera houses in Paris, only to return in the end, to living a peasant life, much as he might have lived had he never have left. This shocking ending must have left many dissatisfied, and at the same time, the political implications that it offered made the ending more appropriate than the happily ever after that most were expecting. During the time in which Sand wrote this work, the Revolution was going on in France. A staunch supporter of the Revolution, Sand embraced the cause as it espoused the freedom from overt societal and governmental regulations over art and lifestyle. Given that Sand led anything but a normal or regulated lifestyle, it is no wonder that society is depicted, especially the government and the wealthy, as corrupt individuals, living off the blood, sweat and tears of the peasants. This book claimed passion over moral convention and was embodied in the character of Francis. However, to view a master of the surprise ending one must look toward Fyodor Dostoyevsky. His work, The Gambler, illustrates the use of the surprise ending, better, it seems, than does Sand. He purposely leads the reader into thinking that the gambler will turn his life around, scene after scene as he is shown what a shambles gambling has made of his life and his relationships.
