between blacks and whites is wide and growing wider. William Raspberry in his article for the Washington Post states that this is not a racial issue, but a personal choice.
Given this then, he seems to be saying that education is the responsibility of the individual, not the state. In the fast paced world of entitlements, Raspberry illustrates how
the African American community has tried to liken the learning gap to the Civil Rights issues of the past. However, he states, this doesnt logically compare. Most of the usual
suspects were examined by the researchers, states Raspberry. Lowered teacher expectations, prejudiced administration and personnel, racial issues, poor funding, racial isolation, were all examined, but in the end though these
may contribute in some small part, they were ruled out as the primary causes(Raspberry 2003). This is because many black students in low income communities were managing to overcome all
of those obstacles to succeed whereas the middle class Blacks were not. What was going on, the researchers seemed to ask? Why would children who have the advantages of money
and first-rate schools systems still be failing? The author states that it boils down to attitude. The black students simply did not want to do what it took to
succeed. Secondly, he states that the parents and the communities, whether they knew it or not were part of this cycle of lowered motivation and ambition. Drawing on ones own
experiences to compare to this statement, one has to conclude that what Raspberry states is true. In one classroom alone there were those African Americans who goofed off all the
time and those who chose to study. Interestingly enough, those who chose to study were often made fun of, even shunned by other African Americans as having sold out while
