their country. However, for their vast contributions, women in Afghanistan must daily struggle against the vestiges of Taliban-enforced rigidity where women are concerned. One of the key elements, most experts
believe, will lie in the ability of the women in Afghanistan to gain access to the education which will help them to further heal their country and contribute to its
regrowth. War is not a new concept for Afghanistan. By sheer virtue of the fact that it lies in the middle between several main trade routes has always made
it ripe for conquest. However, the Afghan people are tenacious and nearly every conquering principality which has tried to subdue it, has failed. This was as true for Alexander the
Great as it was for the British Empire and the former USSR. Not much is known for certain about the womans role prior to the seventh century. Persian influence
was the greatest and seems to be the predominating influence culturally. However, because it is at the crossroads of several larger nations, Afghanistan has been influenced by many nationalities and
ethnicities. This is reflected in its make-up today. In the seventh century, however, the Muslim influence would contribute heavily to the way in which women were viewed and treated.
With the influence of Islam, women were afforded more rights than they had previously enjoyed. Women living in Arabia in the early seventh century had been treated little better than
animals. Islam at least accorded that women may be redeemed and attain a heavenly reward, although this was only attainable through her husband or father. However, after the death of
