searches for his own brand of identity. Without a mother or a father to claim, he is at a loss as to how he might define himself, and so, sets
about to educate himself through observation, surroundings and works of art. Seeking to sort out the mess he has made of his life, the doctor goes for a walk on
one of the highest glaciers. The beauty lifts his spirits, but in the end the enormity of what he has done weighs on him. He looks up to the horizon
and sees the monster approaching him. The monster meets with the doctor and tells him what he has been doing with himself since he fled the laboratory. His
tale includes that of finding a French farmhouse where a blind man teaches him the works of Milton, Plutarch and Goethe. This demonstrates that the monster learned from observation of
the families he came into contact with. He tells the doctor that he learned the ways of language and of humanity. With remorse, the monster relates how he had to
leave when the family saw him and drove him from the farm, unable to look upon him. Basically, the monster is a blank slate when he is created. When he
begins to interact with the Delaceys he ceases to be just a creature reacting to his own base needs, but begins to develop a conscious and as a result, knows
that he is different. Later, he explains how he found William and had hoped that William was yet young enough to look
past exterior appearances. He was disappointed and when the boy taunted him, there ensued a struggle. Finding out that the boy was related to the doctor, the monster strangled him
