is no longer in charge. However, in the case of Christianity, the movement only grew stronger. Though the Jews had enjoyed a tense peace between themselves and the Romans, after
the death of Jesus, the dynamics shifted. In fact, from the time of Jesus death until the reign of Justinian and Theodora there were marked times of turmoil, punctuated with
short periods of peace. When the Romans took over various areas in the Middle East they set about keeping the peace among the indigenous peoples.
Many of the lower officials were not Roman, but Jews(Gonzolez 1984). This was thought to quell any insurrections that might arise to oppose the Roman government. Likewise, it helped the
Romans to assimilate the Jewish people into their culture so as to dissolve much of the elements of the Jewish culture which might lead to terrorist acts, or acts of
rebellion. However, with several slave revolts, and the weakening hold on outer lying territories by Rome, it was determined that a tougher stance needed to
be taken in regard to the Jew problem. This culminated with the execution of Jesus the Nazarene. Many other executions would follow. The secret
times would follow. During this time Christians took to meeting in secret places, often in private residences. Rome increased its persecution of Christians, considering, perhaps, their religion to be a
cult activity which threatened their own multi-theistic one. At any rate, Christians were hunted and persecuted without mercy and without protection of the law. However,
in the 4th century A.D. a Roman Conqueror named, Constantine, determined to march into Rome and become emperor. Legend has it that Constantine was a believer in Apollo until he
