Internet and in various electronic libraries introduced the information that the "Dry Market" concept was likely referring to the "Baltic Dry Market," meaning the "indices" referred to were likely those
belonging to this small, but significant market. There technically is only one Baltic Market, but many indices that make up this market. For purposes of this paper (and because the
information we found on dry freight specifically was limited), well focus our discussion on the Baltic Exchange in general, and determine where this exchanges dry market index fits into the
overall picture. The Baltic Exchange is a market much like the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ (or any number of foreign
stock exchanges). The difference, however, is that while NASDAQ and the NYSE are concerned with the value of stocks of companies, the Baltic Exchange deals strictly with freight and with
shipping. In this exchange, there are a variety of indices, such as the Baltic Dry Shipping Index, which discloses the rate of moving goods by sea on cargo ships (Baltic
Dry Index, 2009). Though the common man (and woman) considers the "stock market" in the United States to be the number
one indicator of the economy, the Baltic Dry Index is just as important. The Baltic Dry Index measures how much it costs to ship dry-bulk freight commodities around the world
(Strong Week for Baltic Freight Index, 2009). Strength in the index suggests a great deal of global trade, while the opposite
