to the silver screen, building, it can be said, upon the earlier attempts by such notable playwrights as Miller, ONeill and Williams. Often perceived as bizarre, antagonistic, and rebellious,
both Mamet and Shepard do seem to challenge the typical and traditional in many facets of their work. In the 1990s, Mamet began writing gritty, screenplays like "The Postman Always
Rings Twice," "The Verdict", "The Untouchables" and "Glengarry Glen Ross" (**). It is in Glengarry Glen Ross that one can see a type of Willie Loman character, though this
Willie Loman is living on speed and raw fear. The same theme is evident in Glengarry Glenn Ross as Death of a Salesman, but is modernized, so to speak. In
Death of a Salesman, one is shown the lengths a man will go to project a certain image. In Glengarry Glenn Ross, events are actually shown where men are
going to great lengths to survive, not just financially, but as men. It is Miller taken to the extreme theme of Death of a Salesman. His stories, often involving the
plight of small-time con-men, dubious real estate salesmen and other marginal types, explore a desperate, obsessed landscape that is deeply twentieth century America. Mamet has been called a satirist and
in that same vein, so too, were Miller, ONeill and Williams. Mamet, however, takes the satire to the place where most audiences begin to squirm uncomfortably because they have a
