be a broad gulf developing between socio-economic levels. In this new century one of the key issues which must be addressed is that of equal access to technology for educational
purposes. However, some believe that there IS no gulf, no divide, leaving many outside of the educational process wondering what the true story is. "The public library offers free internet
access" has been one of the principal answers to the claim that those who are unable to afford a home computer system of their own.1 However, while this looks good
on paper, the reality of the situation has to take into consideration the transportation to and from the public library, safety issues where the age of the child is concerned,
time involved, and availability of the computers once there. These issues all function together to form a less than ideal situation for those who are without a home system. Another
argument often given is that the school has computer labs or computers in the classrooms, that the children have no real need for a home computer. However, this claim is
also biased. The basic education on a computer may be offered, but what about those students who are able to access the internet while doing a report, have a world
wide availability of information that the other student does not have. Whose report is likely to contain more concise information, charts, graphs, and up to date information? In addition
to the traditional matters that teachers have had to face in recent years, the Net generation (as those children are now being coined) are those who have grown up with
