immigrant family with parents who are hesitant in English versus their offspring, who chatter away in two languages with almost insolent ease. Then there are the tales of U.S. families
who adopt children from Russia; children who only know Russian. Within months, it seems, these children master the nuances of the English language.
Yet when it comes to adults, English as a second language is hugely difficult - even those adults who learn the language still struggle with it years after coming to
the United States. The questions on which we need to focus here are 1) why English is a struggle for these adults and 2) what can be done to help
facilitate ESL learning among this population. There is little doubt that English is a difficult language to learn and master, both in terms
and reading and speaking. This is a challenge for those brought up in English-speaking environments, let alone those who were steeped in another language before moving to an English-speaking country.
But adults struggle with ESL more than children for a variety of reasons. Huang et al point out that most adult language learners
are also working hard to "develop a new mode of thinking, feeling and acting - a second identity - while learning a second language" (p. 32). But the problem is
that, while learning this second language, adult learners tend to feel more uncomfortable or anxious while using that second language during their learning process (Haung et al 32). Huang and
