modern population, it can be said that if it were not for him comedy would have been the less. Hailed by critics of his day (and this one as well)
as the greatest comedic playwright of all times, Molieres death has continued to remain a shock, a tragedy, and a great mystery. Interesting enough, the name, Moliere was not
his real name, but was a stage name that he adopted when he was, himself, an actor traveling with a group. Most of the current literature suggests that he changed
his name from the family name to Moliere so as to protect the honor of his fathers name(Bulgakov 1986, see also The Early Life of Moliere). His father had the
singular distinction of being the chosen upholsterer for the court. Thus, since actors were considered socially depraved, it is quite likely that Moliere changed his name to protect the innocent.
One of the greatest questions has been that of Molieres knowledge of his own impending death. At the age of forty he had returned to Paris to establish
himself as a producer/director/writer of plays. He leaned heavily upon his loose ties with the Court and as such managed to wrest himself into polite society, as it were. It
has to be assumed that he did not yet know of the terrible and silent killer that would take his life, as he would go on to get married and
