the 1990s, however, as people were trying to come clean from other drugs. Despite its potential side affects, this hallucinogenic amphetamine is still making the rounds, not only of clubs,
but of schools as well. It is easy to obtain and relatively inexpensive, which explains its popularity. In addition, until recently, the drug was thought to have few short-term or
long-term side effects, assumptions that researchers are now beginning to challenge as they continue to test the drugs and its effect on people and animals.
Ecstasy is considered a so-called "club drug" or a "designer drug" because it is generally taken in club-type or 24-hour marathon dance situations known as "raves" (Doyle,
2000). Very rarely do people ingest ecstasy in a quiet or peaceful location. The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug information classifies ecstasy as an hallucinogen, meaning that it is
a drug that produces behavioral changes that are multiple and dramatic (Drug Category Profile: Hallucinogens, 2002). While these drugs classified as hallucinogens have no specific or real medical use, they
can block some sensations to pain, meaning that the user could hurt him or herself seriously and not even feel the pain while under the influence of the drug (Drug
Category Profile: Hallucinogens, 2002). The drug is, in actuality, is a compound of chemicals under the very long chemical/medical name of methylenedioxymethamphetamine
or MDMA (Doyle, 2000; see also MDMA-Ecstasy, 2002). It also is sold and traded under the names as "X," "XTC" and "Lovers Speed," as well as additional terms (Doyle, 2000).
