Granted, raw, natural talent counts for a great deal, but it must be said that the craft of writing is what separates the hobbyist from the serious novelist. Given this, then, one of the best ways to learn the craft of writing is to constantly analyze and take apart the work of other authors, those whom one admires or finds intriguing. Such would be the case, for example, of Dan Browns suspense thriller, The Da Vinci Code and Dave Eggars book, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. Dan Browns book takes the reader into the dark side of the art world where the protagonists discover that the curator of the Louvre has left coded information that only certain people who are in possession of certain bits of knowledge will be able to decipher. Langdon, the main protagonist and a highly skilled cryptologist from Paris, Ms. Neveu, find these codes at a murder scene to which they are both called. All of these codes eventually form a sort of treasure map which lead to the infamous Holy Grail. However, the finding of the Grail is secondary to what the Grail is supposed to prove: Jesus bloodline and proof that he and Mary Magdalene had a child. This fast paced thriller places the protagonist and his side-kick into one predicament after another as secret sacred sects begin to emerge to confound their search.
