play, The Country Wife, examines the inflammatory themes of sex, lust, greed and deception. There are various characters who seem to represent various factions of the Restoration. This play
was intended as a comedy and as such played off of certain understood ideas and notions about male versus female honor as far as chastity was concerned(Scott 26). The good
and bad sides of tradition versus innovation are offered as well as the juxtapositions of several issues such as true and untrue love, the advantages and disadvantages of marriage, and
promiscuity versus monogamy. The issue of promiscuity is touched upon heavily, however. Cuckoldry is the act of unfaithfulness in a marriage and is an old Restoration term(Scott
54). In many comedies of the time the usual set up was an older husband taking and marrying a young wife who is quite a bit younger than he. This
opens up the very real possibility of the young wife seeking attentions from those closer to her own age. Every older husband in this situation understood this and would go
out of his way to insure that his wife was not in a situation where this might occur. However, a clever philanderer comes to town and invents the
tale that he is a eunuch, otherwise impotent. With the aid of his friend, Doctor Quack, he manages to land himself in the lap and the bed of many affluent
wives in the village. And, what is most interesting, many of these women end up in this situation because their husbands believe that Horner is neutered. The main protagonist
is one of the women who are seduced by Mr. Horner. Margery Pinchwife is shown to be a simple country girl who has been accepted as wife by Jack Pinchwife.
