than they ever imagined"(Sagan 10). Carl Sagans premiere book, The Cosmos, ushered in a whole new perspective on who we are, what we are, and how we might have
arrived here. What is remarkably poignant about this book, especially in the wake of his death some years ago, is that his claims about science holding the key to discovery
of the ultimate truths, seems to ring true even today. The idea that matter and energy is all that exists has become the foundation for so many theories that one
cannot even begin to separate out the various disciplines that Sagans theories have inspired and touched. When one reads this seminal volume of his ideas, it is like taking
a walk through the Universe with some Euclidian guide, whose exuberance and passion for his topic is unbridled. One can also see where the religious conservatives would have taken exception
to this books publication as it openly states that faith covers up the fears and stifles the true search for scientific answers to the questions. What was particularly notable,
too, was how this book places mans place in the universe into perspective. Sagan explains how Earth is little more than a spec, caught between immensity and eternity. Meaning, that
Earth is both unique and insignificant at the same time. This serves to both make the reader humble and proud at the same time. Mankind seems to take itself pretty
seriously and this book illustrates why this is immature thinking. For the most part, quantum physics, Newtonian laws, and the like are not light reading before bedtime. However, Sagan manages
to bring these awesome theories into a form that is readily accessible. His analogies are right on target and suddenly everything comes into focus. On top of this, like icing
