Outward appearances can sometimes be deceiving but what seems to be a constant, as far as civic action is concerned, is the level of income and gender. This paper will
attempt to prove the correlation between income/gender and involvement in a philanthropic cause. Background on the Animal Rights Movement For the purposes of
this paper the charity chosen will be that of the animal rights movement, focusing primarily on organizations such as PETA and the ASPCA. The animal rights movement began occurring as
early as the turn of the century in the United States. As far as rights movements go, Animal Rights is the new kid
on the block. Most generally credit Peter Singer with the beginning of the movement with an essay that he published in the New York Times Review of books. Before this
time animals had no rights. Human beings could pretty much do as they liked with an animal provided it wasnt an endangered species. Singer stated that since the Age of
Enlightenment, when modern science came onto the scene, mankind has realized that he is no more divine than the next monkey in the tree. The notable difference being that man
possessed a higher IQ and the ability to reason. With this discovery, Singer writes, the line between a divine being and the lesser animals was erased; the boundaries were blurred(Singer
1975, see also Giefer 1996).The continued speciesim as he states, which is very much in line with racism and sexism must be dealt with as were other social injustices.
