and women, and offered them an escape from the reality of their lives. In A Midsummer Nights Dream, for example, Shakespeare addresses serious issues in the guise of a comedy,
and utilizes many of the Romantic Comedy conventions which are still used to this day. Shakespeares romantic comedies generally follow a five act structure, moving from conflict to resolution(Howard 299).
In the first act, of course, the main characters are introduced and the impending situations are set into motion. In essence, the characters want something and it becomes apparent why
the object of their desire (be it love or money, power or fame) will be difficult to obtain. In a Midsummer Nights Dream, for example, the audience is introduced
immediately to Theseus, Hippolyta, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius. Immediately, one can see that there is a series of events unfolding which are going to cause problems. Centering upon
the idea of romantic love, several kinds of love are being depicted. Hermia is refusing to follow her fathers wishes in marrying a good match while Hermia is in love
with someone not meeting her parents approval. Egeus wants permission to threaten Hermia with death if she does not obey his wishes. O hell! to choose love with anothers
eye"(Shakespeare Act 1, sc. 1, line 140). Thus, this first criteria and/or convention has been met. Hermia wants Lysander, but her father does not approve. Demetrius wants
Hermia but she detests him. Egeus wants to bring honor and status to his name and household and Hermia will not aid him. Theseus wants to get married but affairs
