on an unrealistic housing bubble and overinflated securitized mortgages, collapse was inevitable. The solution has been to pump more money into the economy. But the solution doesnt do much about
addressing the original thing that caused the collapse to begin with. This is the issue when it comes to problem solving; most people
dont take the time to first define the problem. Rather, they tend to slap a Band-aid on the results, then scratch their heads when problems rear up again. The standard
steps of problem solving involve definition, analysis, generating solutions, analyzing solutions, selecting the best solution, then implementation (The Problem-Solving Process, 2009). Though the basis of problem solving is defining the
problem, this also seems to be the most ignored part of the process. Part of the reason is because many people are
in the habit of believing that problem identification and problem definition are one and the same (Smith, 1998). However, they arent - problem identification makes the person aware there is
a problem (Smith, 1998). The problem definition helps the individual better understand the problem (Smith, 1998). The following is an outline of
how someone trying to solve a problem might figure out the problem definition. Determine if there is a Problem (Problem Solving Skills, 2009). 1) Outline the situation 2)
Determine how/why the situation has deteriorated/is deteriorating Defining the Problem 1) Evaluating the main, "on-the-surface" problem; the visual, also know as the "triggering issue" (Smith, 1998). a) Write
out, in sequence, what seems to be the "surface" problem b) Indicate who is being harmed by this problem (if anyone is) 2) Determining the underlying, interrelated problem/s a) Gather
