ethically make a decision regarding the uses and potential abuses of the emerging technology, especially when that technology deals with biomedical issues. One of these biomedical issues is that of
stem cells. The research that has been done so far has touted stem cells as the Rosetta Stone of medicine, able to
cure such terrible diseases as Parkinsons and Alzheimers. This has called much attention to the research surrounding this discovery. At the heart of the controversy however, is the debate of
whether it is ethical to obtain stem cells from the tissue of dead or aborted fetuses. The positive results thus far have impacted and improved the quality of life for
many patients and though it is in its earliest stages it seems that as scientists begin to understand the gifts that this cell has, more applications will be forthcoming. The
potential for human gain in medicine is awesome. This has been a heated debate and one which continues to wage on the
floors of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the US. Fueled mainly by fundamentalist groups, they have now been joined by several medical ethics groups as well,
citing that the industry does not have enough controls to make certain that abuses do not occur. Scientists are stating that it
is now possible to grow tissues that will not trigger the rejective phase that is possible with a transplant. Already these techniques have produced replacement cells that were successfully
grafted onto a damaged mouse heart, and analogous experiments may be tried before long on a human heart(Calamai). Other possibilities include transplanting viable cells into the brain of those suffering
