narrowly defined roles as pertained to their gender. Women were expected to marry a good catch and settle down to producing children and being a companion to her husband. Men
were expected to be virtuous in every aspect of his life, to keep up appearances and to chivalrous toward women, even going so far as to raise the woman up
on a pedestal as the essence of virtue. However, as these two books illustrate, the reality of living up to these stereotypes created more grief and sorrow than any human
beings should have to bear. When Kate Chopins book, The Awakening, made its debut in the last half of the nineteenth century, the public would have been shocked by the
depiction of the main characters actions. Here was a woman who was independent, has affairs, leaves her husband, isnt interested in being the sole person responsible for the upbringing of
the children, and even goes so far as to want a job of her own. These things are not shocking to modern day audiences, but to those households and sensibilities
of the late 1800s, this type of thinking was, one might state, close to heretical in its suggestion. The Awakening is about a woman named Edna Pontellier who comes into
an awareness of who she is and wants to be. The unfortunate thing about this discovery is that society and her husband stand as major obstacles in this self-awareness. Her
husband, Leonce, acts more like a father than a husband. He gives her orders as if she were a servant and treats her with as much emotional detachment as possible.
What one can tell from this, then, was that men were not excepted to show their emotions. To do so would have been an indication of weakness or lack
