contract which states that a person belongs until such time as they break one of societys laws. At that point, the person loses rights of citizenship. However, upon closer inspection,
this inherent idea has gross potential for abuse, inherent problems, and as Judith Shklar states in her book, American Citizenship, needs to be redefined. A fair opportunity to work, to
earn a living, to support oneself and ones family is, states Shklar, one of the core elements of American citizenship. However, many have been denied this ability. Many are denied
this basic right because of crushing poverty. Some, because of present or past incarceration, also have been shut out from the greater part of society because their citizenship and the
rights therein, have been removed from them. The problems with the old definition of citizenship is that it is too limiting and does not encompass all the certain circumstances under
which one might be excluded or included. Not so many years ago, people of differing ethnic persuasions were denied citizenship. They were not allowed to own businesses, or to apply
for certain jobs. Many very well educated immigrants (doctors, teachers) found themselves working as general laborers because they were not granted citizenship and therefore were not allowed to own or
practice a profession. Another potential problem with the current definition of citizenship is that it does not include those who are poverty stricken. Citizenship supposedly includes everyone when it comes
