the Latin American enrich the tapestry of the American society with their rich cultural history. Unfortunately, theirs is also a history of continued conquest as they experienced colonialism, invasion, Genocide,
immigration, struggles with education, equal rights and cultural perceptions. CHICANO STUDIES The notion for Chicano Studies occurred about the same times as African American studies were proposed, and for
much the same reason. It was determined that in most colleges each department needed to be aware of cultural realities within society, especially as it pertained to Chicana/o perspectives.
At first, most Chicana/o programs were little more than a way to meet the language needs and academic needs of the Chicano/a student. As the program grew more successful the
outlook was expanded in most colleges to include teacher training, to provide a multicultural understanding amongst the student body, but first and foremost to provide the Chicano/a student with an
appreciation and understanding of their own culture(Monroe 1999). MESOAMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE The earliest civilizations are generally regarded to have been the Mayans and the Aztecs. This civilization also preferred
large communities and cities with smaller family groups. The Mayans and Aztecs were well known for their astronomical abilities and were one of the earliest peoples to have highly sophisticated
calendars. Their grasp of mathematics was remarkable given the day and age(Meier 1994). The Aztec civilization can be said to have reached their zenith centuries before the Western Civilization had
begun to flourish. Known for their complex social and religious structures, this civilization might have contributed many things to the world had Cortezs zeal not erased them from the face
