how this particular topic will help the potential reader understand society. For purpose of this paper, the topic will be the roles
of gender in the workplace -- and whether the gender roles are changing in the workplace as society changes. We contend that this isnt happening at all, and that this
is one of the reasons why it is so difficult for women to succeed in the workplace. From the dawn of time,
the sociological structure of human society has involved men as the hunter-gatherers and women as the nurturers and caretakers of the homes. In a hunting gathering economy, and even in
an agrarian economy, such role divisions made sense -- men were stronger, could run faster and didnt bear children, while women were programmed to be more caring nurturing and of
course physically, did (and still can) bear children. As we moved from an agrarian to a manufacturing, then knowledge society, however, the
roles didnt change -- and this is likely one reason why there is continued inequity in terms of gender treatment. Though we are now in a society in which the
brain is more important than brawn, the mentality of both men and women is hard-wired all the way back to our hunter-gatherer/agrarian days.
The problem, however, is that this tends to slot both men and women into roles, because of pre-conceived notions and because of stereotypes. For example, because women are considered
