heavier-than-air craft could fly, the fact was, long-distance flying didnt really become available until around World War I. Furthermore, passenger flying wasnt available until a few years after the ending
of the war. During the early days of aviation, planes took off from fields -- and even from the water. These days,
of course, airports are common in most areas, whether theyre small regional offshoots or huge international hubs. We take it for granted that theyll operate smoothly. But, to be honest,
the fact that airports operate as smoothly as they do is something like a miracle. All types of things need to be kept in mind when it comes to operating
and building an airport, from how the people are going to get there and move around it, to whether the airport itself is too near neighborhoods, to how baggage will
be transported. In this paper, well examine some of the problems faced by two airports -- Denver International Airport in the United
States (which opened in 1995) and Elefherios Venizelos Athens International Airport in Greece (which opened in 2001). Though it was requested that airports be sought that had begun operations as
of 2000 or later, there were no airports in North America that met this criteria. Denver has been the most recent airport to open -- and because it has experience
a larger share than normal of growing pains, news of these growing pains has been in the media quite often. Denver and the Baggage Problem
