to globalization, technology and increased competition, however, all that has changed. Todays CEOs must manage uncertainty, and they face a variety of challenges such as change, conflict, and other complexities
of organizational life. Its not only external pressures, either, that are the problem -- internal pressures such as legislation, diversity management and other factors can take a great deal out
of a CEO as well. The good news for our CEO, however, is that he (or she) now has a wealth of
tools at his/her disposal to help when it comes to motivating employees and creating organizational structure. In this paper, well examine some of these tools and theories and discuss how
the CEO uses them to help create and anticipate necessary change and motivation in a given organization. While some theories have been proven to be not very effective (and some
accused of offering little insight), others have been shown to work fairly well as tools and ways to achieve objectives (Priem and Rosenstein, 2000). Some theories are obvious, others are
not quite so obvious (Priem and Rosenstein, 2000). But the point is, the CEO has a variety of tools from which to
choose to motivate his or her staff. With the correct motivational tools and the right attitude, the CEO can build a strong workforce which ultimately leads to the building of
