This is the case with a fictitious company known as Knarles and Barkley, a father-son business that operates a facilities maintenance company in
the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The company is so well regarded that many of their long term clients - building owners - havent renewed written contracts in years.
Part of the reason is because Knarles & Barkley provides other services, such as window washing, snow removal and touch-up painting. The company will also replace outdated and broken equipment
including water heaters and boilers that make up the heating system of the building. This case discusses what happens, however, when Papa
Knarles leaves for a convention, and decides to leave son Barkley in charge. Through Barkleys inexperience, and Knarles assumptions, the company is finding itself in a world of legal hurt.
Case Overview Knarles & Barkley have four fulltime employees; one of which is a plumber licensed in the District of Columbia.
The plumbers yearly license renewal is paid by the firm as part of an employment agreement that was negotiated four years ago. That in-writing agreement lasts for a two-year period.
But the license, through inadvertence on the part of Barkley, was not renewed this year. Knarles had taken care of this but assigned this duty to his son for the
