were sympathetic to their plight came together to form what is still known as the CPC, or Campaign to Protect Chinatown. Their work still continues today as they battle against
encroachment by city government, big businesses, and outside interests. Their desire is to see Chinatown remain a residential, social and political hub for Chinese Americans. A brief overview shows that
they have accomplished many of their goals, while other goals have not been reached, and roadblocks still exist as formidable obstacles. The Campaign to Protect Chinatown has been able to
garner quite a bit of support. For example, just this year the boards of the Chinese Progressive Association, and the Harry H. Dow Memorial Legal Assistance Fund agreed to accept
the Campaign to Protect Chinatown as a collaborative project of the above-named three organizations(History of CPC, 2003). In addition, the Asian Pacific American Community has combined resources with the CPC
for common goals. Most of the support for the movement, predictably, comes from within the community itself. Many wealthy businessmen grew up in the Chinatown area of the city,
and though many of them may not choose to live there now, their loyalties still lie there. In fact, the CPC reports that a major proponent of their operating costs
come from private donations within the Asian American community. However, the support is not all internal. Externally, there are government agencies which have lent basic support to Chinatown. Many
supporters are not of Asian American descent, but wish to preserve that area of the city on a historical context. There are many, very strong, opponents, however. A revitalization
began in the areas surrounding Chinatown and as such, the area became more desirable. As a result, many of the rental properties have had to raise their rates because of
