arrived. Who is he? The Byronic Character. The Byronic character is so named because of the type of romantic character which was developed by Lord Byron. His characters became
well known and were copied in one way or another by many novelists to come. This Byronic character is evident even in modern heroes, as evidenced by the character of
Neo in the box office hit, The Matrix. The Byronic hero has several defining traits. First, the Byronic hero is a rebel. He is not the classic Greek hero
who is larger than life, is not wholly virtuous or pure. Instead, the Byronic hero often has a dark side, a side that goes against the law. This is
quickly realized in Neos character, in The Matrix. The earliest scenes in The Matrix show Mr. Anderson (Neo) rebelling against the nine to five job that he has. He
does not respect the authority of those whom he works for and instead has some illegal action going on the side. Neo lives alone. He does not seem to
have friends, and feels as if he is an outsider. This, too, is a typical Byronic hero trait. Byronic heroes are often isolated from society, either through some circumstance beyond
his control, or often, the hero will choose this separation for himself. Neo lives in a chosen isolation, but he also chooses to further separate himself from his old life
by agreeing to meet Morpheus. Byronic heroes tend to be intellectuals as opposed to being physically buff. The archetypical hero is brave, but not too bright, needing the
wise old man archetype to aid him in his quest. The Matrix does use the wise old man archetype (several times, actually), but the Byronic hero form allows Neo to
