Bunch," a television series that had a successful five-year run (and continues to be extremely successful in syndication). A decade and a half later, in 1984, America was introduced to
another family, that of Cliff Huxtables in the also successful television show "The Cosby Show." Both of these shows were touted as "family shows," real-life scenarios that reflected American life
at the time. But both shows also received their share of criticism - for not reflecting real life deeply enough, and for giving audiences a rose-colored view of what American
families should be, but ultimately werent. When "The Brady Bunch" came on the air, it was considered a novel show for its
time. Based loosely on the movie "Yours, Mine and Ours," which had at its plot two people, a second marriage and an instant step family, "The Brady Bunch" had as
its original theme the challenges inherent in raising a blended family. The first episode (the pilot episode, in fact), which detailed the second marriages of Carol and Mike, reflected this
admirably, with both sets of children worried that the other parent wouldnt love them enough, and with fears of integration as a family whole. And when the Brady kids did
get together, there was the typical conflict one would expect from step-siblings who are still wary of one another, but who know they need to make the best of it
or else face the wrath of their parents. The "step-family" approach was further stressed as the girls called their new dad "Mike," while the boys called their mom "Carol."
But two years later, when the series gained a permanent spot, suddenly the "step" plot was gone, as were the conflicts. The blended
