the son of one of Moses ministers (Nun, from the tribe of Ephraim). Joshua was also charged with leading the Israelites, who had fled Egypt 40 years before, into the
land of Canaan. Moses, as punishment, was never allowed to "cross the Jordan," but once Moses died, God gave very specific instructions to Joshua as to what was promised to
Moses (the land of Canaan and specific borders). The first passages of Joshua 1 also reiterates what God told Moses, namely that if the Israelites continued to follow the law
(i.e., Torah) handed down on Mount Sinai, God would remain on the side of the Israelites. Joshuas main claim to fame was
that he was hand-selected by Moses to take on the mantle of leadership upon his death. He also went with Moses part of the way on Mount Sinai, when Moses
received the Ten Commandments. The Bible doesnt mention Joshuas specific qualities, only to point out that he was one of Moses spies
sent into the land of Canaan, and that he headed up a variety of conquests that put Canaan into the hands of the Israelites. In the books of Exodus and
moving forward, Joshua heads up many battles on behalf of the Israelites and, of course, conquered Jericho. Joshua, in short, was an interesting character - though not from the tribe
of the Levites (known as priests and religious figures), he had Gods ear and led the troops to conquer Canaan for the Israelites. Though not 100 percent victorious (destruction of
the city of Ai was hard to come by), Joshua did succeed in claiming Canaan for the Israelites, which is what God promised.
