Kahlo, and Gwendolyn Brooks, it is certain that their work and use of their bodies to represent both cultural identities as well as larger social issues will serve as a
lasting monument to two women who pioneered and dared to express themselves in art forms that were as unique as their own bodys fingerprints. Frida Kahlo from Mexico. She can
honestly be called the original wild woman. She was known to have partied with Picasso, had an affair with Trotsky, and threw wild parties for a very odd and assembled
guest list that included heads of state as well as the indigent and anyone who took her fancy. Perhaps her earlier experiences gave her an immediate sense of her own
mortality and as such she wasnt going to waste a minute of it. Like her surrealist contemporaries she tapped her unconscious; the imagery that bubbled up time and again was
absolutely Mexican(Baird, 32). The body surely was for Frida the center of any kind of thought, both about her internal self, as a woman and an artist, and about
her external environment, in the cultural, political and social aspects(Kohol). Kahlos life was a story of pain, passion and controversy, as illustrated in her autobiographical works. She struggled with polio
as a child, survived a serious bus accident that left her permanently disabled and endured more than 30 operations(Baird 32). Almost no one was defining his or her art as
Kohol was during this time in history. Certainly no one was using their own body as a medium and in direct opposition to the modern artistic theories of the
