LUCK. For many Americans the White House isnt just a symbol of the presidency, but its also an idea of justice and
liberty. Dr. Clarence Lusane, Assistant Professor of Political Science at American University in Washington, contends that for many African Americans, the "white" of the White House also symbolizes the cruelty
and exclusion that long defined race relations in American history. Its only been in very recent decades that "race relations" has come
of age at White House. Certainly we now have Barack Obama, the nations first African American President. However, there were questions even about Ronald Reagan, who was President of the
United States between 1981-1989 and his stance on race relations. It could be argued that President George H.W. Bush, who was elected in 1988 and took office in 1989, was
the first "color-blind" man to take on leadership of the country. But racism and the White House is an established fact of
history. In his new book, The Black History of the White House, Lausane traces the path of race relations in America. From the stories of black Americans whove influenced the
white house, to the slaves that actually built it, through generations of servants, aids, activists who worked there, all the way to our president today, Mr. Barack Obama.
