film, Howard Hawks broke new ground in nearly every way with the creating of this film. It should be stated, too, that it didnt hurt that the two stars of the film had chemistry on and off the screen. The issues this film raised in its time served to separate it from the pack of other noir films, making The Big Sleep a classic to be remembered. Generally speaking, the primary tones of noir are those of sadness, despair, disillusionment, moral corruption, the very, very evil, paranoia, and suspense. Most of the heroes are seen as almost anit-heroes in that their tragic flaws are exaggerated. These heroes are down and out, but still managed to plug along at life. The women are of two types: femme fatal and damsel in distress. "Film noir films (mostly shot in grays, blacks and whites) show the dark and inhumane side of human nature with cynicism and doomed love, and they emphasize the brutal, unhealthy, seamy, shadowy, dark and sadistic sides of the human experience"(Film Noir). Most noir films share similar characteristics. The dark-and-stormy-night genre seemed determined to formulate a structure that no one could break away from and be successful. They were wrong. Although The Big Sleep does have many of the classic noir characteristics, it also thumbed its nose at the use of flashbacks. There were no voice-over narrations, with little to no symbolic imagery. This made for a very racy, edgy film(Romney 33). And audiences LOVED it. In addition, the social situations which the film alluded to were also considered taboo topics. The references to drug use, sexual promiscuity by a woman, and homosexuality were thinly veiled and almost served to get the film banned from the theaters.
