does mankind do the right thing because it furthers his own goals in some way? Given that mankind is a product of his environment, but is also shaped by his
psychological make-up, one would have to admit that egoism offers a more logical model for basic human behavior. Psychological egoism is when a person does the right thing because there
is a positive reward for doing so. Altruism, however, believes that a person does good for goods sake, whether there is something in it for them or not. In truth,
the real answer is never black or white, but falls somewhere between the two. However, if one has to choose one or the other, mankind gives more evidence for acting
on his own behalf, despite the appearance of altruistic reasons. Aristotle believed that morality was the state of experiencing human passions and acting at the right time, with reference to
the right objects, towards the right people, with the right motive and in the right way. Therefore, according to Aristotle, a person should be drilled and educated in the moral
ethics until acting the right way becomes second nature to them. These habits, then, according to Aristotle, are what determines the state of a persons character and gives rise to
the personality traits by which he will be governed his whole life. Habits, then, can foster a good life by directing the person to feel pleasure and pain in the
right ways. Good moral judgment is not a simple act of obedience, but it is something which has become internalized and actually gives one pleasure in the performing of it.
