hears the name, Hemingway, one immediately thinks of the gregarious hunter, drinker, lover, who brought such dramatic scope and dimension to the traditional hero-type. But from whence did this new code hero spring? If one knows anything about Hemingways background, it is easy to see that the code hero was not a difficult stretch for Ernest, as it would seem to have been modeled after his own inner struggle for peace. Take any plotline, either from the movies, television, or a classic piece of literature, and they will all share some common characteristics. Primarily, the characters will encounter some sort of obstacle which impedes their acquisition of some sort of goal or destination, which in the end compels them to take risks, engage in actions and interactions that they ordinarily would have avoided, and in the end, serves to move the plotline forward. This is compounded, it can be said, by a myriad of things, especially the setting and time period. Characters, it may be said, in literature, or any other plotline, face basic conflicts that may be intensified by the time and place in which they live. The code hero acts upon and is acted upon by these factors. Hemingway developed a type of hero that is flawed. The hero may have incredible moral fiber, but have a tendency to love women he can never have. Tragic flaws, if one looks at any story Hemingway wrote, are apparent, eventually, and generally these tragic flaws bring the hero into less than ideal circumstances. Hemingway must have been intensely aware of his own inadequacies, though he may never have talked about them with anyone but his psychiatrist.
