on poor grades, too many dont have the basic skills they need, such as reading and math, in order to function competently in todays society. The idea of functional illiteracy, even a few years ago, was ludicrous. Yet today there are people walking around who cannot read simple words and who cannot add simple arithmetic problems. In addition, teachers, for the most part, are underpaid and overworked, while school boards across the country just cant seem to agree on any one solution that should be implemented. As a result, many are tried, but few are chosen. Education reform should, first and foremost, focus on whats best for the children. Unfortunately, because of the process that many schools must undergo in order to initiate any kind of reform, the students and what they need sometimes get lost in the shuffle. Between what the community demands for their children; what the school boards (who have their own agenda) require from teachers and what teachers themselves have time to do (or not to do), reform and change involves more than coming up with an innovative idea and implementing it. While a schools administration is in charge of running the institution, because it requires input from families, teachers and others before it can implement much of anything, the good ideas end up becoming watered down. Unfortunately, the end result is that the students suffer, as do their grades and their chances at a good and productive life. Overall, most educational researchers agree on one thing; moving schools toward any kind of different direction is difficult (Buechler, 2002).
