Angeles, an area known as Watts. During those hot late summer days, it was estimated that upwards of 10,000 African Americans (then known as "Negroes") set on the streets, looting
stores, setting fires, causing destruction and even beating up white passersby, going so far as to even stop vehicles with white passengers, haul them out and harm them. The riot
finally ended military authority was called in to help control the violence. The McCone Commission, which was formulated in the wake of
the violence to try to find out the reason for the violence, pointed out some of the surface reasons for the riots - namely over the arrest of a drunken
African American youth by L.A. police and the passage of Proposition 14. Both of these, most experts believe, led directly to the week of violence that demoralized both city and
population. As with any violence of this type however, very rarely does one cause contribute to the problem. The McCone Commission was
said to only scratch the surface of why the riots occurred - the commission did a good job of determining the straw that broke the camels back. But the real
reasons for the riots can be traced all the way to the 1940s, when Black G.I.s returned from World War II expecting thanks and praise, only to be discriminated against
and shoved into ghettos. This paper will examine some of the likely reasons for the build-up of tensions in the Watts area
