certain that much of what was once a thriving culture and way of life is lost. What is left, then, are many of the works of art, called Codices. However,
it is now hotly debated as to whether they should be called art, or rather considered writing. One can make a good argument for the codices being both art and
language. This is not such a hard conclusion to reach when one considers that there are other representations of writing that is very art-like in its representation, such as the
Egyptian Hieroglyphs, or the some of the Islamic or Asian character writings. It has been suggested that the concept of the word, art is a purely western idea and
unfortunately one size does not fit all with this definition. Many indigenous peoples do not have a word for art in their languages, so therefore, one could most admirably argue
that the codices of the Aztecs were not regarded as art by their originators. The fact that there are deliberate works of art that were placed quite obviously as decorative
elements in their temples and homes, would also lend credibility to the fact that the codices were a form of written language, rather than art. However, there are other schools
of thought that might state that art is the use of pictures to convey meaning. It is difficult to argue that art can convey a message, but one has to
wonder about the ability of a single collection of pictures to adequately represent the complex nuance of the spoken language. That the Aztecs had a formal spoken language is not
