to everything from a social life (via Facebook and MySpace), to shopping (via thousands upon thousands of e-commerce sites), to information (via libraries, databases and so on). That same individual also has access to the seedier side of the Internet, namely the thousands of porn sites, both paid and unpaid, that proliferate online. If similar amounts of porn were printed up in magazines and distributed to book stores and conveniences stores and other outlets, the ethics police would be on these in a fast second. Its easy to destroy print copies of pornography. Whats not so easy - or ethical, for that matter - is shutting down porno websites on the Internet. Back in 2007, Christian Science Monitor writer Mark Lange pointed out, and quite correctly, that the Internet and World Wide Web are "a window into intensive social subcultures from the sublime to the truly sad" (p. 9). The good news, he goes on to say, is that the Internet boasts approximately 6.4 times as many websites devoted to "art" as there are to "porn." Still, with the billions of sites out there, this provides a lot of unwholesome viewing for purveyors of the Internet, especially the teen-agers. This brings up the ethical question - should outsiders get into the act and put all kinds of filters on the Internet? Can filters be put on that dont violate freedom of speech acts or destroy what the Internet is all about?
