AS virtuous men pass mildly away, And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say, "Now his breath goes," and some say, "No."
So let us melt, and make no
noise (Donne 1993). The beginning of this poem is often debated. However, one has to think that the key to the passage is
in the first three words. The word as can be taken to mean "while", but if one takes the word as to mean like or similar to then the entire
context changes and it seems more logical given the tone of the rest of the poem. Thus, the word as is reflective of the way that a virtuous man dies,
without sadness, sorrow, or fear. Thus, he is stating that their love is such that their parting is a like a virtuous mans death. The parting is painful, but it
