a collection of archetypes for modern society. Of the six basic archetypes that Pearson mentions, of most interest to her is that of the Magician archetype in that she believes
that a majority of society has now embraced this archetype of change and transformation. These changes and transformations also appear in literary works and such can be analyzed utilizing Pearsons
archetypal theories. A good example of archetypal intervention and intercession appears throughout the work of Viktor Frankls, Mans Search for Meaning. Victor Frankl spent three years in Auschwitz during WWII.
In his book, Mans Search for Meaning, he shares his experiences which lead him to conclude that: Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is,
but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for
his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible(Frankl 1997). What Frankl discovered was that all sorts of injustices and hardships, such as hunger, violence,
death, fear, are bearable when one carries internal images of loved ones, religious beliefs, a sense of humor, or by the occasional offer of hope just from the glimpse of
nature, such as a tree, or a flower. What Frankl noticed was that those survivors of the camps, such as he was, came out of the camps with a sense
of purpose, even if that purpose was to live to tell the tale so that no one forgot the horror of the holocaust. In this attitude, then, one notices a
move from the Orphan archetype to the Magician archetype. The Magician transforms their own life by, in Frankls case, drawing upon various resources which give his life purpose and direction.
