Arab predicament is the failure of the Arab nations to form any sort of cohesiveness in any facet of their lives, be that political, social, or economic. As a result, he states that having failed to attain success in any of the other venues, Arabs fell back on the one constant that has not let them down: their religious identity. This then is the thrust of the books analysis of the Arab situation since the late 1960s. Ajamis interpretation and identification of the Arab problem is rooted in his assertions that the Arabs lacking any type of cohesion turned toward the one area of their lives that did have organization: their religion. He states that the pan-Arab movement is one of the major causes for the failure of the progressive Arab states. Part of this, also is rooted is the clash between the rigorous fundamental organization of Islam and the desire to be modern and progressive. Thus, Arab countries have found themselves in a no-win situation and an internal struggle between progress and stagnation. Mankind inherently is dynamic and ever adapting, changing. Since the fundamental principles of Islam remain firmly rooted in strict adherence to traditional customs, which were appropriate and necessary centuries ago but can be said to fail miserably in the modern application, Islam fights against the nature of man. Some say that this is not necessarily a bad thing, but when the nature of man is curtailed and not strengthened, stagnation occurs. Ajami addresses this as one of the major contributing factors in the Arab predicament which has led to a continuing and growing frustration by the Arab peoples.
