well. The image of the cowboy is used to sell everything from perfume to records. But why, after so many years, does the image of the cowboy remain ingrained in
the hearts and minds of the American public? The image of the cowboy finds itself being presented in a myriad of ways, interpreted as the perpetual underdog or the fast
shooting, damsel rescuing Hollywood image. However, compared to those two prevailing images, the reality of the true cowboy is much more harsh and seldom compares to the images which are
constantly portrayed by the media and literature. The American Cowboy has long been an enduring icon of the American sense of freedom and independence. Those who do not live within
the United States perceive most Americans as having a similar outlook and demeanor as the cowboy. This may be due, in large part, to the huge amounts of John Wayne
movies which made their way into the foreign markets over the many past years. Current films do little better to offer the real image of what the true cowboy endured.
The reality of the cowboys life was that they were drifters without a permanent home, for the most part. Gone for long periods of time from any type of
civilization these men were often more comfortable with the open plans and the cattle than they were with people who lived in a town. For this reason the cowboy either
chose not to have a family or when he desired to have a family, he left the business of punching cows. For
the most part cowboys had their own internal code. This cowboy code did not brook any sort of dishonesty, either with the cattle or with their dealings with each other.
