can be said to be a tale about the slow unraveling of a time commonly called, The Jazz Age. F. Scott Fitzgerald manages, through the use of various literary devices,
to weave throughout this story, the elements of the Jazz Age, thus not only chronicling the final demise of Jay Gatsby, but the final demise of The Jazz Age. THE
JAZZ AGE The previous generation, the World War I generation, had possessed a work ethic that had proscribed certain sacrifices, certain sustainable ethics that brought success. However, the generation that
would come after World War I was of a different mindset. Life was to be enjoyed and the only person one need concern himself with was himself. One can see
this Jazz Age attitude reflected in the character of Daisy. The Jazz Age was the first generation to worship youth. After the war a subtle shift in attitude toward life
came into being. This produced a new age, called The Jazz Age, which extended into every facet of life. Sexual innuendo was rampant, as were automobiles. The new independence which
filled the highways also filled the psyche of a generation. A BRIEF SYNOPSIS WITH THEMES The story, itself, is a tale of unrequited love between Gatsby and Daisy. However,
the major theme is far from romantic in nature. This story is all about the disintegration of the once proud American Dream. And, in a more personal way, the disintegration
of Fitzgeralds marriage to Zelda. A good example of the message of despair is in the character of Myrtle. She wants
so desperately to belong to the elite groups, but in the end, it is evident that she is just being used. Her natural, bubbly nature manages to gain her access
