changes, and indeed has appeared in stories as a young man. Ancient Greeks loved to formulate new stories about the gods, and so, the first telling of a gods birth
and life is changed over time. This is indeed the case with Cupid, but most tend to pay more attention to Platos Symposium because of the allegorical content with which
it can be analyzed. This is the case in the allegory of Cupid and Psyche. The story of Cupid and Psyche has that classic element of having a story within
a story ( or an allegory). There is the actual course of events that chronicle the love story of Cupid and Psyche, and there is the intuitive story which tells
of the growth of the human soul and the role love plays in this. Interestingly, in this story, Psyche, a woman, seems symbolistic of the human soul and indeed, the
word psyche is the Greek word for soul, while Cupid is the Latin word for love(**). Literally, then, man is love, but woman is soul. The story of Cupid and
Psyche is an interesting one and in due course, Psyche must endure many tests along the road to her final happiness. Psyche was the youngest of three daughters. The difference
between Psyche and her other two sisters was that Psyche was appreciably more beautiful than they. By all accounts, the sisters were not ugly, but Psyche possessed such exquisite
features that even the villagers were taken with her and began to call her Venus on earth. This was an unfortunate choice of words on their part because the
real Venus heard of it. Her alters were being deserted and eventually she became angry. She called Cupid to go and dispatch of the girl making it so that the
