as yet, the new ruler, Augustus, was an unknown quantity. It was considered that unity might be obtained by having a great epic tale written about the history of the
city. This would give them a sense of unity through shared history. Thus, the Aeneid served as a national tool whose goal was to unify the nation and to promote
the leadership of Augustus. Aeneas is the hero in this tale as is Augustus. In Book VI, for example, the hero (who was
patterned after Augustus) must journey into the underworld. This underworld is filled with those who judge the human dead based on the virtue of their lives on Earth. Many
of the judges are taken from various gods and goddesses that the people of Rome would have been familiar with. Aeneass journey
into the underworld showcases Romes glory, past, present, and future. Augustus is shown as the highest attainment of ruler who would usher in a golden age of prosperity and peace.
Many would have agreed to this claim based on the point that Rome had attained globally. Rome ruled most of the known world at this time and the average Roman
citizen would find it only too easy to believe that their nation was the greatest on Earth. This propaganda toward the greatness of Rome
is illustrated in various passages which refer back to ancient prophecies. Augustus was the great nephew of Julius Caesar, so Augustus had a family history which the average Roman citizen
