from all anxiety flooded into my heart. All the shadows of doubt were dispelled." These words were written by St. Augustine in his Confessions, a collection of essays
and writings on his conversion and spiritual experiences. These words have become highly significant since their first utterance because it is upon these very words and the premise that they
imply that the foundation of the early Church was laid. To understand the impact of those words one needs to understand what lead up to the expression of them.
St. Augustine was born a Roman citizen and was not raised as a Christian. His mother converted to Christianity earlier than her son did. In fact, St. Augustine spent most
of his early years despising religion. To place it in modern terms and parameters, St. Augustine was a partier. He managed to move from one philosophical discussion to the
next, first embracing one ideology then the next. The longest he seemed to stay with any one set of beliefs was when he joined the Manichean group. What ultimately came
of this resulted in his work, On the Immortality of the Soul. He initially embraced the Manichean teaching that there are two ultimate principles, one responsible for good and for
the human soul, the other for evil and matter, including the body(Gilson 3-66). However, when he became dissatisfied with the materialism of Manichaeism and was unable to find a basis
for some of their predispositions in his experience, he adopted the skeptic attitude of the Platonic New Academy(Gilson,3-66). On reading some "Platonic treatises" in the Latin translation of Victorinus, Augustine
overcame his doubt about the possibility of a spiritual reality and found his way toward reconciling the presence of evil in the world with the Christian teaching of divine creation(On
