The government of Texas is defined by the Texas Constitution, Article 2, Section 1 entitled "the Powers of Government" (State of Texas (c), 2003). Under this section,
the Constitution specifies that the powers of a government are divided into three distinct divisions "each of which shall be confided to as separate body of magistracy" (State of Texas
(c), 2003). The three separate divisions are the executive, the legislative and the judicial (State of Texas (c), 2003). This section also makes note that a person who is a
member of one such branch may not "exercise any power properly attached to either of the others," unless special circumstances dictate such a need (State of Texas (c), 2003).
The Executive Branch in this state and includes the governor, Lt. Gov. and other officials as mentioned in the state Constitution (State of
Texas (b), 2003). In addition, the Executive Branch includes 222 agencies and 98 higher education institutions such as colleges, universities, community colleges and medical schools (State of Texas (b), 2003).
Governors and Lieutenant Governors serve for two-year terms. The main purpose of this branch is to help enforce rules, regulations and laws to help run the state.
The second branch of government as defined by the Constitution is the legislative branch, consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate (State of
Texas (d), 2003). The main purpose of this branch is to introduce bills and legislation to help the state function efficiently and effectively.
