Women, Testing the Fetus: The Social Impact of Amniocentesis in America, offers that as concerns amniocentesis, politics may have entered into the medical profession and as such, questions the where,
when, how, and who of amniocentesis in the modern ob/gyn practice. Amniocentesis is the process of drawing off some of the fetal fluid surrounding the fetus. Amniocentesis is generally performed
between 14 and 17 weeks of pregnancy. The actual procedure involves inserting a needle through the mothers abdomen and into the uterus where a small sample of amniotic fluid is
collected. From this sample, then, the doctors are able to perform a chromosomal analysis of the cells contained in the fluid. Amniocentesis was developed so that certain genetic disorders
could be detected and then the parents could make an informed decision on whether or not they wanted to proceed with the pregnancy. It was thought that being informed of
the impending birth of a deformed infant would do one of two things. Either the parents would recognize that they were not up to the task of raising a mentally
handicapped or physically handicapped child and would terminate the pregnancy, or that having been forewarned, they would be forearmed and seek additional counseling and education so that they could better
care for the special needs of their child. However, as Rapp points out, it went beyond this initial expectation to include a wider scope of emotions and impacted society both
