I mean luxury, as well as high-priced - this particular car is targeted to a market different from, say, Toyotas Prius. The
companys flagship model is the Tesla Roadster, which has a top speed of 125 mph and can get up to 245 miles per charge (Lambert, 2011). The companys recent IPO
raised more than $200 million, with $33 million of that earmarked for developing powertrains and building and marketing its Model S sedans as well as future vehicles (Lambert, 2011). Tesla
also has partnerships with other automakers such as Toyota Motor Corp. and DaimlerBenz (Lambert, 2011). The company was founded and is run by
current chairman, CEO and product architect Elon Musk. Reporting to Musk are Deepak Ahuja (CFO) and Jeffrey Straubel (CTO) (Lambert, 2011). The next level consists of a plethora of vice
presidents, from the VP of manufacturing (Gilbert Passin); to VP and Controller (Matt Au); to VP sales and ownership experience (George Blankenship) (Lambert, 2011). What I found particularly interesting is
the emphasis on financial talent - in addition to Ahuja as chief financial officer, there is Au (who is the controller) and Mike Taylor - the VP of finance. I
cant help wondering why a company needs three financial experts, unless its trying to raise more capital, which is certainly likely. At any rate, there is a THIRD level of
executives (Mike Taylor is on this level, as is Jim Dunlay, the VP of powertrain hardware engineering (who reports to Straubel). This company has close to 900 employees.
